As a flower painter Paul de Longpre belonged to the rich tradition of 19th century floral painters, setting a standard of excellence that carries through today. Some of Paul de Longpre's most famous paintings were "Double Peach Blossoms" and "White Fringed Poppies" (1902), but I am most drawn to the rose studies. Paul de Longpres realistic depiction of these flowers in my opinion rivals the great Dutch Masters of the 16th and 17th century. It is by his influence I am drawn into the watercolor medium. Watercolor paintings to me always seemed impossible to do. Too causal and impressionistic. Using Paul de Longpre's strict line of realism, we can accomplish some beautiful paintings while exploring this exciting media. |
